If you’re ready to start losing weight and to get in better shape, you may be in the market for some home gym equipment. The idea of having your own equipment where you can use it at your own convenience and without having to worry about a long line or about people in the gym judging you for how out of shape you are can be very appealing, and many have found that the right gym equipment can really get them back into a good routine of physical fitness. But before you grab the credit cards and run down to the local sporting goods store, you should give some consideration to the following pointers in order to get the most out of your home gym.

For one thing, it pays to be honest about how good of shape you are in right now and if you have any physical limitations. If you’re very overweight then some advanced equipment such as an elliptical machine or stair stepper might be a little ambitious. A better piece of home gym equipment to start with might be a treadmill or recumbent bike. These machines are a bit less challenging and usually easier for those just starting out. Getting overwhelmed with home gym equipment that’s too difficult for you to use or that’s too advanced for your current level of fitness is just going to get you discouraged and keep you from using it altogether.

You should also ask yourself where you’re going to store your home gym equipment. If you’re thinking of adding pieces to the bedroom, how much room do you realistically have? If you keep it in the garage, will that make it inaccessible? Will it be too cold during some months or to hot during other months so that you decide not to use it? If you can, it’s always recommended that you clean out a specific area of the living space for your home gym equipment. If you don’t need to drag it out or fight your way around some things then it can be much easier to use and you’ll be more likely to stick with your routine.

If you are unsure if you will really stick with a home exercise routing perhaps purchasing some used exercise equipment would be a good first step. After you have developed a good routing that has lasted for several months then you may want to invest in some of the newer and better equipment. There are many good buys available from people that had great expectations, but they were unable to stick with it for one reason or another.

Be sure to add some resistance pieces to your set of home gym equipment. By lifting weights and adding muscle tone you will burn calories more efficiently and will lose weight faster as well. This doesn’t mean straining yourself or overdoing it. Just lifting a little bit of weight on a regular basis can yield great benefits, so even some hand weights can be part of your home gym equipment and can be easily stored in any closet or under the bed.

Of course your home gym equipment won’t do any good if you don’t use it. Make it part of your regular schedule and stick to it, and you’ll get results in no time.

By: David Cowley

About the Author:

With the increase of outlandish club membership fees, many people are considering building their own home gym, complete with cardio and weightlifting equipment, workout mats, full-sized wall mirror-even the all-essential clothes hamper. Is this a practical solution for you? Read on for some things to consider before making this transition.

Finally! You can work out in the comfort of your own home all alone. There’s no one ogling while you flex those gluteus muscles. No one sneering at you as you take your time the finish your cycling routine. No one to make small chat with.

While it may sound appealing now, there are some practical questions to address before investing in your own gym-at-home. For instance, regarding space, what types of dimensions are you working with? And is the structure of your workout space durable enough for the weightiness of the equipment you’d like to set up?

Are you motivated to actually get the type of work out that you require? While some people feel uncomfortable working out in public places, the advantage to doing so is that you’re expected to do some type of workout in the gym. It takes a lot of discipline to get out of bed (or up from that cozy sofa) and exert yourself in your own home gym, particularly if you live alone. On the other hand, inviting a friend to join you for a home workout can add some impetus to your routine.

Do you live in an apartment? If so, would the use of your home gym disturb your neighbors? Would the use of a home gym conflict with your leasing agreement?

Quite naturally, one would consider the costs involved in converting a spare room into a home gym. While prices vary (home gym equipment can range anywhere from $200 to well over $3,000-just for starters), you’d want to consider your particular needs. You might ask yourself: Is the cost of the equipment worth the amount of time I can spare to work out? Does the brand of equipment matter, or can I get the same type of workout with a lesser known brand? Am I comfortable with purchasing used equipment, or must I have new equipment?

Before committing to these and other factors for converting that back room into a workout area, see your family physician prior to beginning any workout routine. This is not only common sense, it’s also essential in getting the maximum benefit of your routine. While you might envision bench pressing 250 pounds, your doctor might not agree, given your past history with your bad back. Besides, your doctor knows your physical condition likely better than you, so make sure he or she is well aware of which items you’d like to purchase for your workout regimen.

Now that you’ve considered these and other questions, it’s time to actually purchase your equipment. Are you familiar with all the options available to you? Do you have any knowledge of the hundreds of brands that are out there? If not, you might want to consider running background checks on various consumer web sites. Make sure you receive a more-than-adequate warranty along with your purchase. A simple fly-by-night warranty might be okay for the purchase of that TV remote control, but given the enormous finances involved in equipping a home gym-and the strenuous use of equipment-make sure that you don’t come out short-changed.

Still determined to have that home gym? Good for you! Now invest in a pair of good workout shoes and get to work!

By: Greg Smith

About the Author:

There has been a large increase in the home fitness equipment sector in recent years. Unfortunately many would be fitness enthusiasts make the mistake of buying the wrong type of equipment because they haven’t thought about what they require, there is an enormous range and the last thing you want is to buy the wrong piece. Remember that television commercials will always show the apparatus in the best possible way so try to temper your enthusiasm a little. Ask yourself a few questions before you grab your wallet and buy that equipment as it could save you time and money.

As every piece of home fitness equipment has a different function and is designed to exercise or train different parts of the body, activities that you will perform with that equipment should be challenging and something you enjoy. Buying equipment is never a guarantee that you will use it especially if it is something new which just makes it harder to use so make sure it is something that you have already tried in a fitness club, you need to know it will suit you otherwise it will be a waste.

Always remember that the cost of an item of fitness equipment is no guarantee it will be used so think about this before you hand over your credit card,if this were the case there wouldn’t be so many ads in the classified section of the paper each week! Whatever budget you set yourself to spend on it, just make sure it will be up to the job you want it to do because although cost may be an issue, quality is also important.

the equipment needs to be checked as there are many cases of expensive equipment being made shoddily and vice versa. Massive savings can be made buying nearly new sports equipment from the classifieds so take a look at these first. If this doesn’t work how about checking the stores as well, as ex-demonstration home fitness equipment will often be for sale at a massive discount because they are waiting for new stock to arrive. Obviously before all this you need to check your available space as there is no point buying a beautiful, all-singing-all-dancing piece of kit that won’t fit in the house.

It is great if you have a ready made room to place it in but if not, it is worth considering the garage which has become a favorite for many home gym installations. Another point, not so minor is whether you have any existing physical problems that could prevent you from using your home gym. It is important to ensure the equipment is comfortable in use and won’t cause any physical problems or it will be a waste of money. You may be lucky enough to locate a fitness club willing to give a few free trial sessions where you can get an opportunity to try out a range of equipment, this should give you a good idea if it will be more cost effective to buy your own home fitness equipment.

Fitness equipment should never be bought on a whim so if you are unsure about your plans, then ask a professional fitness instructor what he thinks.

By: Miarti Tal

About the Author:

Home gyms are becoming increasingly popular as new technology emerges and home gyms are able to have state of the art equipment you once could only find in an expensive gym. For not that much money, a person could stock a home gym with all the necessary equipment to get in shape and then some. Home gyms come without all the distractions of a commercial gym and the best part is that you never have to wait for a particular piece of workout equipment. In your home gym, you’re first in line for everything.

Save Your Money

A commercial gym can cost a lot of money and, let’s face it, most people who sign up for commercial gyms rarely use the memberships they pay their hard earned money for. Sure, they may go in the beginning, they may go a lot, but eventually, like most people, their enthusiasm for working out fades and they quit going altogether. Yet they keep paying the monthly dues. It’s like they’re throwing away their money.

With a home gym, you pay the initial cost for the equipment and then you pay nothing else. You get to work out when you want and you don’t have to worry about any commutes. With your home gym, you’re already there.

Enjoying A Good Home Gym Workout

Who wouldn’t rather enjoy a good home gym workout rather than trek all the way to the gym and sweat in front of a bunch of other people. Well some people may like the socializing or may even see it as a pool for possible dates. But for those who would prefer to save the time and just do it at home, the home gym workout is optimal. How can one accomplish this successfully, though? This article covers the many different ways in which one can get a home gym workout that matches or surpasses any gym trip.

Upper Body

Many people, mainly women, don’t really get into the great benefits of a good upper body workout. But this workout is just as vital as any other to keep the body in tip-top shape. And not only is it healthy, it doesn’t hurt the body’s appearance much! It is easy to get a good upper body home gym workout. Some simple ideas do not even include free weights. For instance, why not try some good old-fashioned push-ups. Not only do these treat the arms and chest just right, but they add in the extra benefit of a cardiovascular effect. Working on triceps? How about arm bends on the couch? That’ll burn! What about those shoulders? Some simple shrugs, with or without some type of weight, will do the job.

Lower Body

The lower half of the body is easy enough to get in to shape with a home gym workout. Try a series of squats with variations of leg width apart. Adding in some calf presses is easy to incorporate with a simple lift here and there. Another idea for the home gym workout lower body component is trying a bunch of lunges across the living room. After a while, those things will really tighten the legs and glutes up! Sticking with it and trying your hardest with each rep will really show results.

Cardiovascular

Even the heart-beating benefits from a cardiovascular exercise can be complete in a home gym workout. In addition to simply keeping the heart going with an ongoing strengthening set, an exerciser can try many of the old standbys. For instance, jumping jacks have always been a heart-healthy way to get the body moving. Or what about keeping a jump rope around the house? Maybe even a hula hoop? These are fun ways to experience benefits from a home gym workout.

By: Eddie Lamb

About the Author:

If you want to get into peak physical condition, build muscle mass, lose excess weight and develop healthy cardiovascular conditioning, it is crucial to workout on a consistent basis. Inconsistency is definitely not your friend where working out is concerned. A few years ago, the only place one could find quality exercise equipment was in an actual gym or fitness center. Now, many people are instead choosing to purchase home gyms and other types of exercise equipment for their private use.

The Cost Advantage

Many people decide that a home workout program is a better option than paying membership fees at a local gym or health club. Instead of spending money every month on a local gym membership with older equipment, home fitness gyms allow users to make a one time payment for a piece of exercise equipment that can give a total body workout and should last many years. Though it may cost more up front, buying a home gym is a lot easier and less expensive in the long run than joining a fitness club, and you’re more likely to use the home gym, unlike the club membership. Most people who sign up for gym memberships quit after just a few months. Purchasing a home gym is actually an investment, because it will offer years of wellness, decrease the likelihood of disease, and may even lower your health insurance premiums.

The Time Advantage

People find many excuses why they are unable to exercise, from time constraints to tight budgets. However with home fitness gyms, users can not only save money, but workout quickly in their free time, freeing up extra time each day to relax and spend time with friends and family. Parents know how hard it can be to find the time to exercise when they have to pick the children up from school or daycare, take them to sports practices, cook dinner in between, and somehow get their kids to do their homework. With a home gym, they can easily exercise in half an hour, the time it would take just to drive to a local gym, and shower before dinner’s ready.

The Convenience Advantage

Another advantage of using a home gym is that you have the choice of working out whenever you want at your own convenience. This isn’t always the case with health club memberships. While some health clubs are open 24 hours and thus cater to all types of schedules, you may have to wait for machines or free weights to become available because someone else is using them. Especially if the club is extremely busy, it can be difficult to even get your heart rate up because you’re continually waiting for other people to finish. That’s not the case with a home gym. You can work out any time you want to and you never have to wait for anyone to finish if you’re the only person using it.

As with anything in life, it is going to take hard work if you ever hope to achieve the results that you’re looking for. However, that isn’t to say that working out can’t also be enjoyable. If you work out in the privacy of your own home, you can play some music you love while you work out, or watch your favorite TV program if you work out in front of the television. It’s important to do whatever it takes to keep your workouts both fun and interesting. If you remember that, you will have a better chance of sticking with your routine and you’ll be that much closer to achieving the results you want. The benefits of working out at home are numerous, but the most important thing you have to do is make a commitment to yourself to workout regularly. If you can’t commit to it, then you will be wasting your money no matter whether you purchase a home gym or a club membership. Don’t get discouraged if the results you want aren’t immediate, as long as you continue to work towards your goal, you will eventually achieve it.

By: Heath Sentares

About the Author:

For many years, if you wanted to start a strength training regimen, you only had two real choices. One is to buy free weights and dumbbells and workout at home, or you could get a monthly membership a fitness gym and get access to their weight machines. But today there are more options open to the fitness conscious consumer, and there are plenty of choices in the home gym equipment field to consider. So if you are in the market for a home gym here are some of the things that you should be looking for.

Generally, most home gym equipment falls into two major categories, the first being home gyms that use rods or bars to create resistance, and the second being strength training machines that use a weight stack or plates. The biggest difference in these two will be the price that you pay for them, and the second difference is the amount of space that each one takes up in your home.

The first kind of home gym equipment often can be folded up and takes up very little space in the room. However many experts claim that the workouts with this kind of equipment are not as thorough or complete as the more expensive weight training machines which usually take up a lot more room space. But whichever type of equipment you choose, keep these considerations in mind:

Consider the size of the room where you will be placing the equipment first. If space is a major consideration, then it may best to go with a unit that folds up and out of the way.

The assembly of any home gym equipment can be difficult at best, so if you are not used to assembling this kind of product you may want to pay extra to have someone put it together for you. Just be sure to include the assembly cost in your overall budget.

Make sure that any home gym you buy is made of solid and durable materials. The frame itself needs to be made of heavy steel, and be very strong and sturdy even when supporting the maximum weight. The cables that are used to connect to each weight stack should be especially strong and made of quality material too.

Most people will need a weight stack of around at least 200 lbs. to be able to make the most use of the equipment. If more than one person plans on working out at the same time on your equipment, you might even consider getting a second weight stack in that case.

Finally, never buy any home gym equipment without testing it personally beforehand. Regardless of whether you buy your home gym online or not, you need to go through a complete workout on it to make sure that it will fit you best. If you do, and you follow the guidelines listed above, you should be able to find the best home gym equipment for your needs.

By: Jim Johnson

About the Author:

Exercise is an activity many of us want to or mean to do but do not get around to, due to lack of time, self-defeating negativity or just plain laziness. But all is not lost — solution is at hand if you invest in a good home gym.

The most important thing when buying a home gym is for you to first decide on your workout goals and requirements. There are different training methods for the various areas of your body, such as for your legs, calves, shoulders, chest, arms, back or abs etc. Some people exercise for overall fitness while others prefer to focus on toning and strengthening specific areas of their body. Depending on your focus and requirements your home gym equipment may be as simple as comprising of only barbells, weight-plates and racks, to more complex multi home gyms.

Simple home gym equipments such as power racks are suitable mainly for simple weight training exercises but they lack versatility. Multi home gyms allow variety in your fitness regimen. A good home gym lets you perform many types of exercises from bench press and leg curls to sit-ups and butterfly.

Another thing to consider is that home gyms are usually used by more than one user in the household, so it is more cost effective to purchase one that best meets all the users’ requirements. It is more practical if the home gym provides more than one workstation with two or more weight stacks so that more than one user can workout at the same time.

Home gym equipments nowadays include frames, cables, pulleys and weight-plates. To ensure you purchase a good quality home gym, check that the frames are made of rustproof steel, and test the cables for strength and durability. It should have a good combination of weight-plates to suit different needs. The bench should be adjustable for perfect body positioning for different exercises. Also check whether the individual components come with a lifetime warranty.

Home gym costs can range from $350 to more than $3,500 depending on the complexities of your home gym equipment. You could also buy your home gym equipment in parts, and some brands even offer options for various additions. Buying home gyms can be mind-boggling so it is recommended that you go read up on home gym reviews by health and fitness experts to learn about the pros and cons of different home gym brands available on the market.

By: Susan Jan

About the Author:

Weider home gyms are some of the most popular home gyms on the market. How do they measure up against other home gyms on the market? Here’s a quick overview of Weider home gyms to help you decide if one is right for you.

Weider makes both weight stack home gyms and crossbar (or crossbow) home gyms (these are similar to the Bowflex Power Rod gyms).

Weider is a subsidiary of ICON Health and Fitness, one of the largest producers of fitness equipment in the world. Icon also manufactures brands like Proform, Golds Gym, Free Motion, Nordic Track, Epic and Reebok.

Most Weider home gyms use bendable bars (crossbow or crossbars) to create resistance.

The advantage to this (vs. using a weight stack with pulleys) is a more affordable, space efficient home gym that still gives you a wide variety of exercises to work your entire body including abs, back, legs and arms.

Weider has several crossbow home gym models, the most popular are the:

Weider Platinum – Offers resistance of up to 340 lbs. and 75 exercises

Weider Advantage – Offers resistance of up to 240 lbs (upgradable to 440 pounds) and 65 exercises

Weider Max – Offers resistance of up to 240 lbs. and 65 exercises

Another unique feature found on the Weider Platinum (and Platinum Plus) model is the Digital Resistance Control. This means you can change your resistance with the touch of a button – there are no manual adjustments needed.

Advantages of Weider home gyms are that they are space efficient, more affordable than weight stack gyms, and can give you an overall total body workout. They offer lots of exercises (65+) to work your major muscle groups. They can also be a viable (and more affordable) alternative to the more expensive Bowflex Power Rod home gyms.

It’s also important to note that while the warranties on the machines themselves tend to be short, there is a lifetime warranty on the crossbars.

Disadvantages to Weider machines are that, for the most part, these are economy machines (especially the Weider Max and Weider Crossbow Advantage).

They are not built with the same high degree of construction as other home gym brands and as such may not hold up over the long run as well as other brands.

Also, some people do not like the type of resistance that the Crossbow models give you, claiming that a weight stack machine with pulleys, give you a better range of motion and a more sophisticated type of resistance.

Because of this, a Weider Crossbow home gym might not be the best choice if your goal is to get ‘ripped’ or ‘huge’. (You might want to consider free weights or a leverage home gym for that).

A Crossbow home gym would be more suitable for toning and strengthening your muscles.

Bottom Line:

If you’re on a tight budget but still want a decent home gym that will give you a wide range of exercises to work your entire body, Weider home gyms give you good value.

They’re affordable, space efficient and can be more lightweight than a standard home gym. The Weider Advantage and the Weider Max have fairly positive user reviews behind them and they give you a large range of exercises, making these models a good value for the money.

The disadvantage is that these are economy gyms. They may not hold up as well over the long term as other gym brands – a fact seen in generally shorter warranties.

However, considering what you get for the price tag, most Weider home gyms – especially the Crossbow models – offer good value.

By: Kathryn Oneill

About the Author:

I am a twenty-four years old graphic artist. I used to have a problem about my weight because my job does not really require me to exercise. In fact, my hands, brain, and eyes are my most active body organs when I work. Being a graphic artist, I sit down a lot. I reached a point when I became overweight at 220 lbs. At first, I did not care about my weight. After all, there were many other people around me who were heavier. I got teased by my friends and my family because of my weight. I also felt that my weight hindered me from doing the things I wanted to do. I easily got tired when at one point I tried playing basketball with my friends.

I also got depressed because I was not getting more attention from the ladies. That is why I decided to take action. I started going to the gym to work out. At first, I did not want to. I felt that those who go to the gym are just plain vain. I was proven wrong because there many people in the gym that come from different walks of life. They also have different reasons why they go to the gym. Not everyone went there to get ripped muscles. In the first three months, I dropped 40 lbs by undergoing intense workout. I was happy with the result but I knew that it was not enough. I had to continue with exercising and working out. Going to the gym, however, was getting in the way of my work. My friend told me that instead of going to the gym regularly, I could come up with my own home gym.

I started buying dumbbells and barbells. They were the cheapest. These home gym equipment helped me strengthen and build my biceps and triceps. They also developed my shoulders. The next home gym equipment that I got was the bench. This equipment assisted in my weight training program. My home gym was slowly filling up but I knew that I had to get other materials. I got a simple treadmill for my home gym as opposed to the more specialized ones in the gym. I then purchased a bicycle. These machines improved my cardiovascular endurance.

I hade to give importance to my heart as well after a long time of not caring about the things I eat, especially the ones rich in fat. These machines also help me sweat a lot. They were instrumental to my weight loss. That is why I enjoy using them. They are tedious to use, but I reap the rewards of having them in my home gym. I am a believer of the adage, “no pain, no gain.” Coming up with a home gym is very practical. While you may spend more buying your own home gym equipment than what you are already spending in your gym membership fee, you save on a lot of things.

You have these equipment to yourself, contrary to the setup in the gym where you have to share the equipment to other users. With this in mind, you are also responsible for these equipment and how long they will last. Finally, you save time. With a home gym, you do not need to go to other places to work out and exercise. You can work out even if you are busy with your work.

By: Lampangnao Mak

About the Author:
